About the Temple

The founder, Narayana Bhat Marathe, was an ardent devotee of Lord Venkataramana. He used to frequently travel on foot from Durga village, Karkala taluk, to Tirupati. His unwavering devotion and spiritual connection to Lord Venkataramana inspired him to establish a Venkataramana temple in the western ghats tropical region, realizing his dream in the peaceful atmosphere of Durga village. The original idol of this deity is about 2 feet tall and resembles the Tirumala Venkataramana idol, and hence this sacred site is called Kiru (Mini in Kannada) Tirupati.

ಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಾದ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಭಟ್ ಮರಾಠೇ ಯವರು ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣನ ಮಹಾ ಭಕ್ತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು . ಅವರು ಕಾಲ್ನಡಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಗ ಗ್ರಾಮ , ಕಾರ್ಕಳ ತಾಲೂಕಿನಿಂದ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಲು ಆಗಾಗ್ಯೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಮಾಡುತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುವ ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಬಂದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಗಾ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ ವಾತಾವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಕನಸನ್ನು ನನಸು ಮಾಡಿದರು ಎಂದು ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ಈ ದೇವರ ಮೂಲ ವಿಗ್ರಹವು ಸುಮಾರು 2 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರವಿದ್ದು , ತಿರುಮಲ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಹೋಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಕಿರು ತಿರುಪತಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ .

The Sri Lakshmi Venkataramana Temple, located in Pundaje of Durga village in Karkala Taluk, was established in 1864 by Sri Narayana Bhat Marathe. The temple has earned great renown for the divine grace and blessings it bestows upon its devotees. According to local folklore, the consecration of Sri Lakshmi Venkataramana here and the re-consecration of the deity at the Karkala Sri Venkataramana Temple were both performed on the same day by the Avadhoota Appa Shastri Damle. While the idols of Sri Venkataramana are "Chara" (movable) in most other places, this temple is unique for its immovable stone idol (Sthira Shila Murti), which holds immense significance and has earned the temple the name "Kiruthirupathi" (Mini Tirupati).

The founder had originally registered nearly 300 acres of land located across Durga, Melebettu, Mala, Phandije, and Mundaje in the name of the deity. The descendants of the founder resided in the temple’s vicinity and managed its administration. Being the lineage of the founder, the administrative responsibility traditionally passed to the eldest member of the Marathe family, who served as the hereditary trustee or caretaker. The income generated from the vast temple lands was sufficient to manage daily affairs grandly, including "Trikala Pooja" (rituals performed thrice a day), festivals accompanied by traditional music (Vaadya), and Sacred Banquet (Anna Santharpane). In the past, a chariot (Ratha) built for the Lord’s festivals was, for various reasons, donated to the Sri Ananthashayana Temple in Karkala.

In later years, following the implementation of Land Reform laws, the temple lands were transferred to the tenants. Today, only 27 cents of land remain under the temple’s direct possession. As the income from the tenants dwindled, the daily rituals and maintenance work suffered, leading the temple into a state of dilapidation. With the aspiration to restore this once-glorious spiritual center to its former strength, the family descendants, former tenants (Okkalu), village residents and the devotee community came together to take action. Following a comprehensive Ashtamangala assessment in 2019, all required propitiatory rituals have been meticulously performed by 2023 to pave the way for restoration.

Subsequently, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the foundation stone laying ceremony (Shilanyasa) for the new temple was performed. Under the grace of the Lord and with the cooperation of local and outstation devotees, the re-consecration (Punah Pratishta), Ashtabandha, and BrahmaKumbhabhisheka of Sri Lakshmi Venkataramana were performed with great splendor from Thursday, March 13, 2025, to Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The temple is open for all Sanatana devotees for Darshan, poojas, rituals, services, and festivals.

ಕಾರ್ಕಳ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ದುರ್ಗ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಪುಂಡಾಜೆ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ 1864 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಭಟ್ ಮರಾಠೆ ಎಂಬವರಿಂದ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಕಿರುತಿರುಪತಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ ವೆಂಕಟರಮಣ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ತನ್ನ ಮಹಿಮಾತಿಶಯಗಳಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ಆರಾಧಕ ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದಿ ಪಡೆದಿದೆ.

ಸ್ಥಾಪಕರು ದುರ್ಗ, ಮೆಲೆಬೆಟ್ಟು, ಮಾಳ, ಫಂಡಿಜೆ, ಮುಂಡಾಜೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸುಮಾರು 300 ಎಕ್ರೆ ಆಸ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ದೇವರ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ನೋಂದಾಯಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಶ್ರೀ ದೇವರ ಆಸ್ತಿಗಳಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಆದಾಯದಿಂದ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನಿತ್ಯದ ಆಗುಹೋಗುಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಆದಾಯ ಬರುತ್ತಿತು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ತ್ರಿಕಾಲ ಪೂಜೆ, ವಾದ್ಯ ಸಮೇತ ಉತ್ಸವ, ಅನ್ನ ಸಂತರ್ಪಣೆಗಳಿಂದ ವೈಭವೋಪೇತವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು.

ಕಾಲಾನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದ ಭೂಸುಧಾರಣೆ ಕಾನೂನಿನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಜಮೀನುಗಳು ಒಕ್ಕಲುಗಳ ಅಧೀನವಾದವು. 2019 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಷ್ಟಮಂಗಲ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಾವಳಿ ನಡೆಸಿ, ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ ಕರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನು 2023 ರೊಳಗೆ ನೆರವೇಲಾಯಿತು. ತಾ|| 17-1-2024 ನೂತನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಶಿಲಾನ್ಯಾಸ ನೆರವೇರಿತು. ತಾ|| 13-3-2025 ರಿಂದ 19-3-2025 ವರೆಗೆ ಪುನಃ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ, ಅಷ್ಟಬಂಧ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಕುಂಭಾಭಿಷೇಕ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವೈಭವೋಪೇತವಾಗಿ ಸಂಪನ್ನಗೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಸಕಲ ಸನಾತನ ಸದ್ಭಕ್ತರಿಗೂ ಈ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಸನ್ನಿಧಿಗೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಲು ಮುಕ್ತ ಅವಕಾಶವಿದೆ.
